Wikis

I have just checked out the 3 wikis as instructed. Firstly I looked at the full Library Success: A best practices wiki. There is a lot of potential for this wiki as an accessible knowledge store house for librarians. As a children's librarian I chose to look specifically at this area & there were only 2 contributions. This leads me to believe that time is the one thing everyone is short of on an international basis. I then checked out the Book Lovers Wiki. I liked the way it was split into genres and linked back to both Princeton Public Library & their catalogue. I then went to SJCPL subject guides wiki and looked at the genealogy link. I was so impressed with this one I sent the link to my colleague who looks after genealogy at our Library.

I do like the idea of wikis - they seem a much better way to store information than sending the same over & over in emails - I tend to delete a lot of email & this is a way to ensure the information will be available on an ongoing basis.

Week 4

I like the idea that RSS gives you the ability to selectively filter sites that you know will be of intereset to you. I have chosen 3 library feeds, the Powerhouse feed, a craft feed [I'm a Children's Librarian] and the National Geographic feed. I can see a lot of potential for RSS in the LIbrary environment for both Librarians and their clients. As Libraries embrace this technology clients will be able to select RSS feeds that interest them - say Children's activities, teen activities, new resources such as large print, audio, DVD - the list is endless.

Where's the picture?

I just can't seem to get the actual picture from Flickr onto my blog. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but I will try & upload pictures from my computer onto this blog if & when I have a moment. I'm going to move onto week 4 & see if this is any kinder. Happy blogging!

Purple Rain

Hopefully this upload will work. I have been stuck on week 3 due to over commitment & an inability to successfully upload an image. Every time I get to this point something happens & the whole thing disappears. I have chosen this picture because I love the colour purple & it reminds me of my brother. I am not even going to bother trying to preview this post - every time I do I lose everything so... hopefully it will all be there!

Thoughts for week 2

This reminds me of an exercise where the first instruction is to read all the instructions first. It was only after creating my blog & first post that I read on & discovered further questions to be answered/discussed. Personally I love the idea of lifelong learning - I believe that we all continue learning through life both officially through traditional channels such as university or simply through life experiences. It would be dreadful to think that all the knowledge we have at this point in time is it. That is one of the things I enjoy most about my work - I am constantly learning something new - you never know what question will be next through the door!

I have checked out the other blogs mentioned in Learning 2.0. They look quite professional but it is interesting that there are very few if any postings/comments attached to them. They do demonstrate various uses for blogs in a library environment but I would hope to elicit more responses to justify the time involved in creating a blog. I have taken this course with a mind to setting up a blog for teens at our library.

My first blog

Like others undertaking Learning 2.0 this is my first blog. Thankyou to those who have already created a blog - this gave me some idea of what to do. I look forward to sharing ideas and information as we progress through this course & also customizing my blog when I find the time - lisey.
